Vice Mayor Renato Bernardo Sta. Maria was then a young police patrolman of the Philippine Constabulary-Integrated National Police (PC/INP) while pursuing his BSC Management degree at Manuel L. Quezon University as a full scholar. |
After completing his Management degree he took up law at the Arellano University and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Thereafter, he was granted a teaching position at the same University. He then applied for lateral entry as officer in the PC/INP and was accepted and commissioned as a police lieutenant. Now a police lawyer, he was assigned as prosecutor at the Court Martial, Office of the Chief Judge Advocate (OCJA), PC/INP. After his stint at the OCJA, he was assigned at the Kalentong Sub- Station in Mandaluyong City and became its first Station Commander.
True to his oath to serve the public, he left the police force and decided to join politics in 1988. He ran and topped the municipal-wide councilor's race in 1998. When the local elections for councilors were held by the district, he again topped as councilor in the Second District of Mandaluyong.
As a councilor, Vice Mayor Sta. Maria served as the Majority Floor Leader of the City Council for almost 10 years. He was the councilor who authored the most number of ordinances and resolutions.
He is also acknowledged as the Father of the Book of Ordinances. He spear headed the compilation of Mandaluyong's municipal and city ordinances from 1988 to 2005 that resulted in publication of the book on ordinances.
In 2006, he was cited as one of the Outstanding Councilors of the Philippines by the Philippine Jaycees. He was awarded this distinct honor in ceremonies held in Cebu City.
He is currently the Secretary-General of the Vice Mayors' League of the Philippines -National Capital Region and Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means of the Vice Mayors' League of the Philippines-National Chapter.
